You're making a logical error here known as the fallacy of relative privation. By this logic, we would only be doing the right thing if we were only ever talking about the absolute worst thing in the world and nothing else.

Not defensive, just confused. The judgemental language you used made me think you were complaining rather than merely curious. "...Getting tied in knots about doing something entirely natural..." You then implied that caring about animals leads to a desire for human extinction.
