Both media & academia are much like the fashion world in that originality is necessary to be noticed among the cacophony. Problem is, all the big rational arguments are now cliche, so commentators who strive to be original must resort to insanity.
Universalism is such a broad philosophical position that it is impossible to say anything meaningful about it without resorting to specifics. Unfortunately, the specifics are by now largely cliche.

As a way of structuring societies, absolutely. As a way of making a name for yourself as a commentator, not so much.
