It's certainly hard to get people to understand you, but I think it's quite easy to get yourself to understand other people. Just reflect that people believe things for a reason, and then try to sleuth your way to that reason through polite conversation.

I find this approach infinitely preferable to stressing yourself out trying to convince someone that you're right.

The good thing is, when you get to understand someone, you're then better able to determine whether trying to convince them is worth the time & effort. And if it's not, you tend not to have such hard feelings about it.
