I'm not sure men think of such things when catcalling. It seems more an act of unthinking callousness than calculated malice. Of course, men differ from one another greatly, so I don't discount that some may in fact do it out of malice.

Just playing devil's advocate here: What about instances where there is only one male present who is catcalling, with no other males around? Is this more or less worrisome?

I'd say such occurrences are exceedingly rare. And could probably be largely explained by people being drunk, horny, or just insane. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
