And before you go down the route of “guns don’t do anything against the government” route, consider how well the US is armed compared to Iraq, and meditate upon the game theory of asymmetric warfare for a bit.
The point the author (and I) disputed was your belief that a militia is a hedge against tyranny. It uses examples of how it was not only ineffectual in history, but also led to tyranny of looters, etc. I knew you wouldn't agree; just wanted you to see where I'm coming from.

I said nothing about militias. That was the cultural seed of the amendment. It’s now 300 million guns and a healthy skepticism of centralized power, networkable using modern cryptography and mesh nets in the near future. That’s why their argument is a straw man of high order.

There may be a healthy skepticism of centralised power, but gun ownership is pretty centralised. Apparently, nearly half of US guns are owned by just 3% of population. That's still far away from your dream of a true diffusion of power.
