In common usage, there is a distinction between gender and sex. Your genitals determine your sex. Your feelings determine your gender.

People do many things in the name of racial purity, and that's still largely* fictional. *I guess you could debate this point.

I certainly could. I'd also point out that gender identity is generally personal and present at birth, not tribal and learned from environment like racial identity.
