Yeah, struck me as odd, too. Seems people are less interested in understanding others than in stopping people from understanding them!

Game theoretically, I’m not sure this changes much. Instead, giving feedback to the tweeter about the emotions they create in others, and measuring how they react, would be interesting. For example, trolls create negative emotion knowingly and double-down...

That would also be an interesting study. My thoughts behind this one was that knowing the emotional state of tweeters would allow one to determine whether they were, for instance, being sarcastic. It might also decrease the feigning of outrage (for kudos) & misery (for sympathy).

Using Twitter requires that you allow it to relay information about your emotions to other tweeps. It's part of the T&Cs.

Plus, if emotional states did accompany every tweet, we'd soon realise exactly how much of the outrage, misery, love of life, etc that is ritually expressed on Twitter was genuine.

Is this a pitch for your pending "Black Mirror" script?

Ha, I have a few of them. Like, imagine it was possible to retweet actual people, so you could fill up the world with people you like? Who would go viral? Would it be only the nice people? And would they still be nice when they found themselves with an entire army of selves?

The prospect confuses me. On the one hand, a vast majority of Twitter users could benefit from non-verbal cues in exchanges. Yet it might interfere with my use of Twitter.

Yes, I was intrigued by what people desired more: the ability to understand others, or to keep themselves secret. Personally, I couldn't decide what I wanted, so I decided to just make a poll.
