If society were a house, its foundation would be its people. As Lincoln said, a house divided against itself cannot stand. Nor can one whose individuals lack integrity, and are themselves plagued by moral and psychological divides. Social stability is emergent integrity.
Interesting. But an argument could also be made that progress depends on division -- thesis and antithesis to use Hegel's terms. Only by pushing against others do we eventually lift up society as a whole.
