I fear the unknown unknowns of the effect "enough money to live on" will have, and the constant clamour for more for nothing. And the politicians all too willing to give it.

It certainly has issues. But the way I see it, there is no alternative. The machines are going to eventually put most people out of work, and since the machines will be generating far more resources than they consume, it makes sense to distribute this to the people they replace.

We could go full Luddite, in fact given the current economy, I see that as likely.

I think people are now too addicted to Netflix and online porn for that, heh.

A scenario. Profit motive drives huge layoffs initially in the low skilled environment. UBI is then used to buy them off. When they become a significant, in fact likely majority of the electorate, what will career politicians do to get their face in the trough?

UBI recipients will differ greatly in their political needs. Some will use their liberation from the monotony of 9-5 to create their own businesses or artworks. Others will carry out humanitarian work. And, of course, others will just consume. So it depends really.

I expect to see a huge boom in small business because of the reduced risk. As it is now, you can completely ruin your family with a failed business. Also, as tech improves, we'll move closer to an age of abundance, you'll need to spend less money on your needs.
