I'm absolutely terrified of universal basic income
It certainly has issues. But the way I see it, there is no alternative. The machines are going to eventually put most people out of work, and since the machines will be generating far more resources than they consume, it makes sense to distribute this to the people they replace.

We could go full Luddite, in fact given the current economy, I see that as likely.

I think people are now too addicted to Netflix and online porn for that, heh.

I think most people imagine implementing the UBI now, and I think that would likely fail. It has to be implemented when it's needed: once the unemployment rate increases to close to an unsustainable point and there's extra revenue from the lack of wages paid.

But, even then, I'm not sure UBI is optimal. I think it'll very likely be implemented, though, because it's the only solution I know of that could conceivably be implemented in short time in an emergency, and I suspect our government to wait that long to take action.
