It is possible to argue while representing the ostensibly reasonable side. The only way to truly be reasonable is to see things from the POV of the person you are arguing with, so that you can understand the mechanisms of their disagreement. Empathy is the path to reason.

Some arguments arise not due to misunderstanding the other's world view, but due to competition. In these circumstances empathy may help people understand the other's motivation, but it won't always result in a solution.
