But, in order to argue with someone, you must lack empathy with them. Otherwise, what you have is an attempt to reason them to your POV: a debate.

It is the case that one party, a better informed and insightful one, can fully know the experience of their interlocutor, recognize they are wrong & thus persuade them through reason. Lack of empathy explains a certain kind of argument. Asymmetry in understanding causes another

Oh theres a semantic issue here. The word "argument" doesnt have to carry a negative connotation. An argument is a formalized logical structure

That's not the sense in which I was using the word. I was referring to an altercation between two people, not a logical proposition.
