Maybe it's different 'across the pond,' but over here it's generally the rightists demonizing their opponents as evil, and the leftists ridiculing them as stupid. Your overall point about the effect of those terms on dialogue remains valid, though.

I think Christian conservatives definitely regard those who disagree as evil, but there aren't many of those here in Europe. The main right-leaning movements here are secular conservative/libertarian.

It may well be that you’re debating with the wrong people - on both sides!

I don't know, man. I'm on the left, and that sounds pretty stupid...

The literal first word of my tweet is, "Generally". Of course there are many exceptions such as yourself.

Where are all these convinced rightists you speak of?

This seems mostly true. I can sometimes convince leftists I’m not evil but it’s much harder than convincing rightists I’m not stupid. And I’m much more likely to view those to my right as “evil” than those to my left, although I *try* not to gratuitously judge folks.

I've met plenty of folks to the right of me who may not have thought I was stupid any more, but still prayed for my immortal soul. And, I've never met any one to the left of me who I couldn't convince I wasn't Satan. So, it might just be the people we're hanging with.
