I don't see how someone can coherently hold these two views (yet ppl seem to): (1) When women are mocked/insulted online: a bad thing was done to them (2) When men are mocked/insulted online: "nothing bad" was done to them, it's not like they were fired, it's only words online

I believe you're right: "punching down" = bad; "punching up" = good or neutral. This is of course only possible in a worldview where people's group identify is more important and constitutive (by a wide margin IMO) than their experiences as individuals.
