***Megathread time. It seems that a lot of people believe that the chief Islamic extremist threats of our time are jihadi groups like al-Qaeda and IS. This is wrong. The chief Islamist threat has always been the Muslim Brotherhood.***

Genuine question: Will the problem of Islamic extremism ever end in the coming years? I agree that there are extremist groups in every country, India too. However, they are kept in check by the law of the land and do not threaten to dislodge the constitution/elected govts

I do think it will eventually be drowned out by the relentless tide of consumerism, just as Christian extremism has largely (but not completely) been washed from Western Europe. But it will take time.

Thank you for helping to open people's eyes about Islamic extremism. I think the comparison with the Church of Scientology is a helpful one in this regard because people are willing to criticise that in a way many of them wouldn't criticise Islamists. It gets the door open a bit.

I am asking because societies/ civilisations move in cycles. For a very short time the world has a real chance of emancipating the poorest of the poor n letting science reach every human. But, that doesn’t seem possible if we allow extremist groups to grow unabated like that
