It is frustrating, writing about jihadism from a strictly neutral POV. You get accused by leftists of Islamophobia for pointing out religion's role, and accused by rightists of Islamic apologism for pointing out that religion doesn't operate in a vacuum.

The surest sign that someone doesn’t understand jihadism is that they say “it’s about religion, not grievances”, or “it’s about grievances, not religion”. No, you fools. It’s about many interconnected things. Humans are not simple enough to be motivated by just one thing.
