The best way to get likes and retweets is to tell people what they already believe. What a tragedy.

I'm guilty of it, too. Although I also like and retweet arguments I disagree with but which I think are well-expressed. I also like/retweet interesting things I don't know much about.

Agreed. There is currently an atmosphere of warfare, wherein people are encouraged to view those with whom they don't agree as the enemy. It would be better for everyone if we stopped assigning negative motivations to people who hold differing worldviews.

An interesting POV, but I'm not convinced that it addresses the problem I initially laid out: that people tend to retweet what they already believe (rather than what they ever-so-slightly disagree with).

There are those who read everything. Views are influenced or supported by openness to information, regardless liking/rt. Yes, there is a circle jerk mentality to Twitter, but humanity is laden with weaknesses.

Twitter's interface makes it impossible to return to a tweet later. Anything that takes time to think about gets lost before you can like or retweet.

To be fair, the *only* way to sway people is to appeal to propositions they already believe are probable. Of course most of what you're describing is just signaling without any extra intent to sway people.
