Twitter has confirmed for me something I've always suspected: humans need to hate and ridicule just as much as they need to love. And even if you created paradise on earth, people would eventually feel compelled to graffiti over its walls.

We can use non-psychoanalytic terms if you wish. The irrational brain. The reptilian brain. The bestial aspect, ruled by dream and emotion, that is often self-destructive if left unchecked.

Agreed. But we're on Twitter. Using terms like reptilian brain and Jungian shadow is shorthand for the sum total of neural mechanisms that are responsible for our more animalistic behaviors, all the lust and fear and rage and delusive dreams that lead us from reason.

I must disagree. Half of the people in this world are trying to save it, fix it, & make it better. If we could continue to teach children sustainable ways to live, the world can heal, just like other things can heal from illness. Humans don't have to be a cancer. It's a choice.

I don't think humans are a cancer. And I agree that there are many people in this world trying to build and heal. But everyone has a dark aspect, the Jungian shadow, if you will, that is always in danger of undoing the good work.

Is there a paradise void of graffiti?

There's no paradise, with or without graffiti. The point was that people would vandalise paradise by imposing their own whims on it at the expense of everyone else.

Have you read Ursula Le Guin's ultra-short story called, "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas"? Haidt's views on disgust crystallized, for me, what is implied in La Guin's story. Morality depends on disgust to exist.

I haven't, Becky. But it sounds like exactly the kind of thing I'd enjoy, so I'll look into it!

Not so much reject but not appreciate, properly without pain.
