I can think of one ideology that cannot be criticised.

Which one? Islam? Because that clearly can be criticized, as the sheer volume of online anti-Islamic comments attests.

Anonymously? Maybe. If you are in public life, however, there's no way you're going to do it without threat of violence or vilification in the press.

There are plenty of people who criticize Islam publicly, and live very comfortable lives. Sam Harris, Rita Panahi, Imam Tawhidi, Bill Maher, Brendan O'Neill, Tommy Robinson, etc. I sometimes criticize it myself, and I live in a largely Muslim area. Times have changed.

We have very different definitions of 'comfortable', then. Mine would involve not receiving death threats for things I might say. I really don't see how you can put Tawhidi and Robinson in the 'comfortable' camp, in particular. I notice you don't mention Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

Gurindoor @G_S_BhogalA follower of mine doesn't think it's safe to publicly criticize Islam. So I'll just say, using my real name & photo, and living in a largely Muslim area, that the only argument for the world being created by Allah is that the world is just as sick, twisted and fucked up as He is1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

I notice you didn't answer my point about Ayaan Hirsi Ali. I'd also argue you are not a public figure, which was the basis of my point.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali spends her days criticizing Islam. She's still alive. And you didn't say that we were only talking about public figures. You simply said it wasn't possible to publicly criticize Islam, which I just did.

Read my second tweet in this thread again. Ali is still alive - despite fleeing Europe and because of her personal security detail. As opposed to say, Theo van Gogh who is very much dead because he criticised Islam. So, if that's your definition of 'comfortable'...

Clearly, there are some nutters out there. Just as there are people like Thomas Mair, who murdered Jo Cox because of her support for multiculturalism. The thing is, these people are exceptions. Islam is criticized by countless people in the West every day, without reprisal.

In the eighties, during the Rushdie affair, things were different, because not many people criticized Islam. Now everyone in the West is doing it, and extremists know they can't kill everyone. So they kinda have to just live with it.
