Ppl can choose to be on twitter or not. Unlike some ppl on Facebook the majority of us are concerned with the state of our democracy. We are intelligent enough to discern the facts & lies. Evyis entitled to express their opinions. We can engage with like-minded ppl.

If we chose to block out engagements with individuals who exhibit destructive behavior or try to undermine our efforts it is our right. Sounds like you are trying to add to the effort to discredit the news.

Legit news sources comprise a tiny percentage of most people's feeds. The rest is made up of uninformed individuals who, by virtue of being human, are striving for likes/retweets and other forms of validation.

It's still an amazing news source imo. Anytime a story breaks anywhere in the world, I'm very likely to see it pop up in my feed within minutes. The rest doesn't make it not a news source. Hell, many people are obviously not solely or even mostly concerned with popularity either.

Twitter's noise to signal ratio is extremely high compared to a dedicated news website. And I think most people are interested in having their tweets liked and retweeted. Social validation is a very human desire.

That doesn't even come close to making it not a news source. If you're on Twitter and you follow a good number of people, you're going to be very up to date on the news and it doesn't take a genius to sift through the noise to get to the news. And the rest is common everywhere.

Okay, it is a news source, albeit a terribly precarious and inefficient one, unless of course your feed consists largely of objective reporters and news outlets, which very, very few are.

I get news stories almost instantly after they break and the clear majority of people I follow aren't reporters. The news still spreads among people who are just RTing it and adding biased commentary but it takes me literally 3-5 seconds to find an objective link once I'm aware.

I'm better off using Twitter than following any single, dedicated news source if my goal is being up to date on global news so I'd say it's an incredibly efficient news source.

Plus Twitter has the added benefit of entertaining and educating me in the meantime. Don't get me wrong, the platform has a ton of problems but you can get a ton of utility out of it if you use it well.

I agree with that. But I think it's harder to use well than you suggest. Just look at that tweet by James Caan about the blue passports. His fake news was retweeted hundreds of thousands of times, while his correction got just a few thousand.

I actually agree wholeheartedly that this is a problem, and with social media in general.
