Trump and his movement are not fighting for the right to speak freely, but for the right to be assholes without consequence. They are a Frankenstein's monster spawned by society's culture of offense, but that doesn't mean they are its cure.

A college cannot determine what is legal - it is not a branch of govt. It can make requests, which is precisely what Trump's admin is doing in the article I tweeted. John Mill Stewart argued that both approaches were equivalent as the end result was the same.

The real issue surrounding free speech (i.e. the one highlighted in the culture war) is not that defaming someone could get you prosecuted, but that stating facts from, say, evo psych, can cause you to be ostracised by peers as a racist/sexist.

We appear to be talking past each other. A college can choose not to host you, but it cannot act as a plantiff or prosecutor if you say something it doesn't like (but which is not illegal).
-
What it can do is ostracise you. Mill's point was that whether or not you broke the law is immaterial. The end result is the same: there are some things you cannot say without having your life ruined.

Well, it's pretty much the same thing as policing people's phrasing in academia, which is one of the "pro-free-speech" right's biggest causes. The defamation you speak of is a different issue altogether, one that is not a left-right issue at all.

Well, that depends what you mean by "free speech" and "correctly". I think there's a way to say pretty much anything without prosecution. But it's hard to state certain facts without being labelled and condemned by your peers, on both the left and right.

But nor is the supposed free speech that Trump claims to stand for. Saying something offensive is not a
#1A issue, because no one is legally banned from being offensive. It's a "being an asshole" issue. -
Being offensive is criminal in the UK and most of Europe now. Cherish your freedoms whilst you still have them.
