Great thread, most informative, thanks Gurwinder. The thing that I cannot understand is why jihadis imagine that terror is going to achieve their goal.

Well, as we know, their imaginations are pretty wild!

Have you ever heard them discuss the 'benefits' of violence versus just having a street stall with free copies of the koran? Or does no one question the strategic 'merit' of killing people in terror mode?

They all question it. Most jihadis, contrary to how they are portrayed in media, are extremely reluctant to kill, and it takes a lot of conditioning to get them to go through with it.

I am trying to see the logic used in that 'conditioning'. 'If we do this action it will lead to that outcome, because....' Any further comment?

You won't find logic in something that is inherently illogical. The reasoning is emotional, based on anger, desperation, impatience, and faith. To destroy oneself and others so nonsensically is a deliberate rebellion against reason, which is the ultimate enemy.
