By self I mean the amalgamation of idiosyncrasies and propensities that form one's character, as well as the self-perception of this character. I'm aware that all of this is mutable, but the main reason it is mutable is that prolonged exposure to other people changes it.

Whether or not it's a bad thing depends on whether the people you hang out with are "worse" than you are. And yes, people grow, but the main way they do this is by learning from others. Interpersonal programming often overrides intrapersonal programming.

I feel like this statement applies more to extrovert personalities. Introverts spend so much time self-reflecting that they are typically well aware of who they are all the time.

A little bit of non-sarcastic editing: People are only ever alone when they are alone. If you spend all your time around others you won’t know that you are like alone.

A friend showed me part of "Meetings with Remarkable Men" last night and one quote stuck with me until I saw this: "Become yourself. Then, God and the devil don't matter."

If you spend your whole time around others is that you the real you? If you act differently around others it is still you, you are just someone who changes behavior. You don't change into a fish when your around other people. You are ALWAYS you.
