I'm not sure that's true. Some of the most depressed people I know are also the most secure. It seems to be *because* they are secure that they have the time to ponder the things that end up depressing them. I think that a little hardship is in fact necessary for happiness.
The belief by Corbynites that their economic problems would be solved if they raised taxes on top earners. The belief by Trumpites that they could end terrorism by banning Muslim immigration.

Partisanship is, in effect, a gross simplification of reality, a rendering of everything in black and white, right and wrong. It's the belief that your biases are virtues, and your means are justified by the ends.
