1/ Many are saying today's NY terror attack failed because it didn't kill anyone. This ignores the fact that the purpose of terror attacks is not to kill, but to warn us that jihadis still exist and still hate us. Given all the tweets about it, today's attack was a success.

2/ It doesn't matter that the main reaction was mockery. Every terror attack is PR, and there's generally no such thing as bad PR. Mockery will hurt them only in the eyes of those who already despise them. To those who see them as underdogs, it'll make them more sympathetic.

3/ In any case, it's easy to laugh at the ineptitude of these DIY terrorists. We often hear about how lightning and falling out of bed kills more westerners than terrorists. But all of this belies that jihadism is fat-tailed.

4/ That is to say, while jihadi attacks are generally rare & low-impact, the chance of an attack being catastrophic is abnormally high. And with the proliferation of tech that can be appropriated for terror, such as self-driving cars & CRISPR, the tail is only going to get fatter

5/ Today's attack was not intended to be devastating. It was only a threat, a teaser trailer for the apocalypse. Jihadis know they are currently powerless. But they believe their time is coming. And, as new, potentially calamitous tech reaches the market, they may well be right

My apologies, Nathalie. I was gonna try to reassure you by saying terrorism is nowhere near the biggest problem we're facing, but I guess that's not gonna help you sleep any better, heh.

Stuffing face on Christmas has always seemed kinda guilt-free, I suppose.
Failing that, there's always antidepressants
