2/ It doesn't matter that the main reaction was mockery. Every terror attack is PR, and there's generally no such thing as bad PR. Mockery will hurt them only in the eyes of those who already despise them. To those who see them as underdogs, it'll make them more sympathetic.

3/ In any case, it's easy to laugh at the ineptitude of these DIY terrorists. We often hear about how lightning and falling out of bed kills more westerners than terrorists. But all of this belies that jihadism is fat-tailed.

4/ That is to say, while jihadi attacks are generally rare & low-impact, the chance of an attack being catastrophic is abnormally high. And with the proliferation of tech that can be appropriated for terror, such as self-driving cars & CRISPR, the tail is only going to get fatter

5/ Today's attack was not intended to be devastating. It was only a threat, a teaser trailer for the apocalypse. Jihadis know they are currently powerless. But they believe their time is coming. And, as new, potentially calamitous tech reaches the market, they may well be right
