If you spend your time railing about men catcalling or sitting with their legs too far apart on subways, but are silent about forced marriages, forced hijab, stoning, FGM, honor killings, and sex slavery, you're not a feminist - you're a Western-centric ignoramus.

Absolutely. I never said people shouldn't criticize catcallers and manspreaders. But to focus only on them, while ignoring all the brutality in the East, is not feminism, but parochialism.

I was half kidding. Manspreading isn't really a feminist issue IMO. But there are plenty of western fems that I've met hate the atrocities that occur to women in the middle east but they feel powerless. They tend to ask themselves,"what can I do to change the culture over there?"

Speak out about it, maybe. Put pressure on their governments to put pressure on the Saudis, etc. Or support those who flee misogyny in the East, instead of demonizing them. Saying they feel powerless is just an excuse for inaction. In a globalized world, anyone can help anyone.
