It has little to do with platform, and more with people's disinterest in changing their perceptions. Find a group identity that make you feel comfortable then protect that group with all you've got. Being ideologically homeless is not pleasant (no sarcasm - it actually is)

Its sad, because I can't think of a way to change it. How do you get people to question their beliefs? It doesn't help that social media has given rise to bullet proof echo chambers.

I think it can be better in some ways because it forces you to not cover too many points in each response and focus on one narrow scope of the argument at a time. Both participants have to be on board with that though.
