Why not just use "they" singular? It's quick, simple, elegant and soon becomes automatic so you can do it without thinking

True. I think the idea of gendered pronouns is redundant really, no real reason for a man to be "he" or a woman to be "she".

I see what you’re saying but it can serve a purpose in that it can help specify quickly and conveniently.

Say you’re talking about a guy in a group with 3 girls - say “him over there” and it’s immediately obvious who you mean.

Instead of saying "him over there" you could just say "that guy". Maybe, in some situations, it'd be easier to just use "he", but I'm not sure if such situations would be common enough to warrant the additional baggage and hassle of having to use gendered pronouns.

Its an extra word to know, but it succinctifies language at the point in time it’s being used - so in fact there’s less baggage practically.

The free market of language chose that its a worthy trade. Also - “that guy” is just a two word version of “him”. It’s just as gendered.

The free market of language doesn't follow what's rational or practical though. English is filled with redundant and pointless shit. And "that guy" may be gendered, but it's not a pronoun.

Is that necessarily the case? Theres practical nuances and costs to redefining language en masse. Language is honed insidiously over time.

It’s not “officially” a pronoun but the combination of the two words conveys a meaning that’s functionally identical to the word him.
