I find Dawkins to be far humbler and more aware of his ignorance than most professors. He never claims to be a theologian, and doesn't need to be one in order to make the claim that religion is irrational.

Often he argues against a strawman; I feel he hasn't read widely enough. His performance debating Archbishop Rowan Williams was unimpresive.

When arguing with Williams, he attacked Cartesian dualism & Williams had to give him a potted vr. of theology since Wittgenstein.

Why was it wrong for Dawkins to attack Cartesian dualism?

It was irrelevant; Dawkins attacks weak (often widely rejected) versions of religious belief, ignoring the principle of charity.

It wasn't irrelevant, though. It was about as relevant as it gets, because all forms of spiritualism are built on Cartesian dualism.

Christianity, true, rejects mind-brain reductionism, but that all forms of spiritualism are built on Cartesian dualism is wrong& ahistorical

Fair enough, all forms of spiritualism with the exception of idealism (which comprises a tiny fraction of spiritualism). Anglicanism is very much dualist in nature, which is why Dawkins would have attacked it.

Except idealism, pre-Cartesianism, Wittgensteinian theology, &c. See where I'm going? Naïve Cartesianism is not current: low-hanging fruit.

Can you explain how the examples you mentioned do not posit mind-body dualism?

Dualism ≠ Cartesianism. Idealism is Monist, so a given. Wittgenstein would talk about language games. Pre-Cartesianism is very diverse.

Mind-body dualism = Cartesian. How do Wittgenstein's language games make his "theology" non-Cartesian? And could you give examples of pre-Cartesianist theology that isn't dualist or idealist?
