Once upon a time, corporations sought advantage by championing right-leaning politics. Now they seek advantage by championing left-leaning politics. The reason for this is that lobbying governments has become less effective than lobbying the general public.
That may play a part, but the general leftist agenda has even been adopted by the middle-aged people at the very top of companies.

It appears more to do with the fact that having a leftist outlook is more hip and more "friendly", and therefore good for PR purposes.

Well also leftish publications are more likely to scream at businesses & their execs—viz Gawker—so there’s an appeasement angle as well.
