The problem is not just about ideas themselves. Twitter/Facebook also try to hook you up with social media users who have similar outlooks to you, and who know people you know. Their algorithms thus encourage parochialism and tribalism.

Is this an argument for internet trolls? Not the assumed cave-dwellers, rather the front-line vanguard that dive headlong into battle!

Trolls exist to incite rage, so they fuel the hyperpartisanship. What's needed is for people to start following thinkers who challenge them intellectually rather than merely pander to them.

One way I expand my knowledge is podcasts. You can listen to them while driving, etc. 2 I'd recommend are Sam Harris's Waking Up and Joe Rogan Experience. They have people of all persuasions on, to talk about all kinds of things, so you'll defo find your ideas challenged by them.
