I do it all the time, to make people contradict themselves, etc. Thing is, most people will continue to debate long after you've completely destroyed their arguments, because their ego is on the line, and anyway they're often too stupid to realize when they've lost!

I was really just talking about the point at which you've disproved their main argument. Many people continue to debate beyond that, which just gets them into a quagmire of excuses and deflections.

On the contrary. Neither party considers themselves convinced, nor do they agree to disagree. It’s a lose-lose. ‘The pout’ fallacy

Yeah. My point was that it is impossible to win a debate unless your opponent is humble and intelligent enough to know when they've lost, which is rarely the case.

Stop debating at precisely the moment they identify a flaw in your argument and pretend you never saw their rebuttal!

But you'll no longer be there, so you'll never know they did that, and can richly congratulate yourself on a magnificent victory!

You know amongst the Sikhs their prayer says "Sikhan dhaa Maan Neemaa thay Maath Uuchee!" - meaning let "Sikhs not be egotistical but wise instead" - moving away from a debate is the wise move, keeping on engaging to win is about egotism!
