How is twitter diff from newspaper editorials, pamphleteering, soapbox, town square? Speed. Twitter is real life, in this era.
I think the difference is that Twitter allows only very short messages, so all arguments become incredibly simplistic caricatures of themselves. This leads to lots of misunderstanding and straw-manning. Plus, the anonymity encourages abusive behavior.

When it is used as a 'headline' forum, yes. But, serious discussions spring *from/through* threads, links, and screengrabs. Shortcut.
