Erdogan & West have had many tensions; West's lack of support following last year's coup attempt, West's support for Kurds, Turkey's tacit support for Isis, Erdogan's Islamist authoritarianism, the disputes with Germany and Austria earlier this year, etc.

All that's kept the West acquiescent to Turkey's outrageous demands is Turkey's perceived strategic importance, most notably Incirlik air base, but Turkey hasn't yet pulled its weight in NATO, so I reckon most Western generals are wondering why they're even part of the alliance.

As for Turkey's need for NATO, seems it's less for protection and more for economy (a stepping stone to becoming part of the EU), but it's quite obvious that EU membership isn't going to happen, so Erdogan must think NATO is now pointless, and will seek to join the RSII coalition

Since the Saudis now are also courting Russia, this year could mark a huge turning point in the geopolitical balance of power. We've all wanted to see Western support for Turkey and Saudi end, but the actuality of it may well be bad for us Westerners. Better the devil you know...
