Good. The burqa hampers vision and movement, interferes with vitamin D production, complicates simple things like eating, makes its wearers targets of widespread prejudice, poses a security risk, looks utterly shit, and doesn't even have a basis in Islamic scripture.https://twitter.com/Independent/status/916288076032479232 …

I used to be completely against a burqa ban for precisely this reason, but after living in a place where burqas are everywhere, and seeing the difficulties they pose for women, I've since changed my mind.

Agree - the real problem lies in the fear men have about women....how they cannot seem to see us as human beings on the same journey...

It does but it must be the women who refuse to wear it....women must discard it....and men must support them.....

This was my original belief. The thing is, in most cases, men *force* women to wear it. Women simply don't get a say. And they're brainwashed since birth to believe it's good for them. This cycle has existed for hundreds of years, and will continue unless the govt steps in.

It fills me with joy to hear you say this, truly....this conversation should be mainstream....but many educated Muslim women wear it...?

There is a pseudo-feminist argument for it, which was posited by one of the smartest (and most deranged) al-Qaeda agents of all, Aafia Siddiqui, who claimed that covering up allows a woman to be judged by her character, not her appearance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skmj16h40wE …

But it's a moot argument, because the same rules that force women to cover up also prevent them from having any character at all.

...most women know it's a sham....education of men & women is where the answer lies..for it is we who, consciously or no, oppress women...
