A war on the US's home turf, where most of its military is already based, would be very different from one fought in a far-off country.

Ok. But if the largest and highest tech military in the world can’t beat dudes in caves, it clearly isn’t just about technology.

If the US had wanted to annihilate the Taliban, or Viet Cong, or Iraqi insurgency, it would have. It chose not to because it didn't consider it worth the time, money, or international condemnation. If the US govt was intent on wiping out its citizens, they'd have no chance.

You don’t think the US wanted to wipe out the Taliban or ISIS? ...ok. Either way, I’m offering examples of guerrilla fighters beating US.

The point is that any civilian militia would be decimated by the US military. Sure, some may survive to carry out a low-level insurgency, but what the govt wanted the govt would take, and an armed militia would not be able to stop it.

Would they have better odds with or without being armed?

Without being armed, because they'd be considered less of a threat, and so wouldn't be annihilated in a preemptive strike.

Given our conversation here, I don’t think your strategy point 2 is going to be doable.

So you think a civilian militia armed with semi-automatics could withstand the US army, navy and air force? Do you realize how absolutely fucking crazy that sounds?

No- I think that the odds of a civilian force defeating a government force increase if the civilian force actually has weapons.

It probably changes from about 0.0001% to 0.0002%.
