Gun deaths won't convince NRA-types of need for gun control, for they consider gun deaths an acceptable cost of 2nd amend. Better to show 2nd amend is obsolete, with 2 arguments - US govt is not hostile to its citizens. - If it was hostile to its citizens, guns wouldn't stop it.
Increasing restrictions. Campaign for federal bans on semi-automatic assault rifles, which didn't even exist when the 2nd amend was written. And from there, gradually tighten further.

5 million AR-style rifle owners. I guess we can hope for next generations to turn them in, if your scenario gets traction.

Absolutely. But in the mean time, there's so much that can be done to reduce mass-shooting deaths - background checks, tighter licensing laws, regulating cost of guns/bullets, banning sales of new semi-automatics, education campaigns, incentivized amnesties, etc.
