The biggest obstacle to enacting effective gun control legislation in the US is the idea that a democratic government is an existential threat to its people. America was founded on this narrative, and it is what keeps people from wanting to part with semi-automatic assault rifles

No, it's the idea that GOVERNMENT, unchecked, is an existential threat to its people. Fact well-proven by history on BOTH sides of Atlantic.

Yes, governments are threats to their people. But modern, Western, democratic ones are not existential threats; their power is too fragmented. And, even it weren't, the idea that it could be defended against with guns is a relic of a different time, one that no longer holds water

I don't actually think you disagreed with what I said. Separation of powers makes turning the US into a tyranny ruled by brute force a close to impossible task. And if it ever succeeded, guns wouldn't save the people.

(I think it highly unlikely we're going to be attacked with nukes--even by DPRK; that doesn't mean we can afford to give up our defenses.)

Potentially, everything is a threat. Sanity means prioritising those threats that are credible enough to warrant the effort required to safeguard against them. Otherwise, I'd waste my life fortifying the ceiling of my apartment to assuage my fear of it collapsing.

Agreed. And the threat of populist demagoguery to the survival of the Republic is clear today, as it was when Bill of Rights was passed.

The dotard sure is a threat, but I don't think he's a military threat to his own people. There would likely be a coup before that happened. On the other hand, I agree he is very much a threat to honour, decency and above all, truth.
