We have a problem with cute animals like cats and dogs being killed, but we regard octopodes as coldly as we regard insects, and we love to slaughter and eat pigs, even though both pigs and octopodes are far smarter than cats and dogs, and at least as smart as human toddlers.

is feeling pain proportional to intelligence. I doubt it is. I think it has to do more with how affectionate dogs are and loyal companions.

True. I think part of it is that cats & dogs express themselves in ways that we recognize in ourselves. Pigs and cephalopods are more alien, but they do feel fear. And the ethics of killing them isn't just about suffering; It's also about denying consciousness to sentient beings.
