I disagree. The world would be many times more violent if revenge were the norm. Better that we outsource our 'revenge' to systems of law.

Revenge *is* the norm. If it weren't, everyone with a heart would be a doormat and assholes would just walk all over them.

There are other means of regulating assholes. Anti social actors are oftened shunned from the group, which comes with lots of consequences.

I suppose, but it would really dillute the classic meaning of revenge. Usually revenge involves taking pleasure in the retribution.

If the asshole's mate value goes down for instance, can the potential mates really be seen as taking revenge by ignoring the asshole?

It depends how they feel. If they *feel* vengeful, it's revenge. In many cases, the feeling of wrath can spur social actions like censure.
