Islam has no inherent nature. It is defined by interpretation, and can therefore be pretty much what we want it to be.

Not all interpretations are equal, are they? Aren't they more or less valid? Otherwise we have postmodernism w the random play of signifiers

There is no accurate way to measure the validity of an interpretation, because they all refer to something that isn't factually true.
