Whataboutism is NOT acceptable as an argument even when proving hypocrisy. Using hypocrisy to disprove a point is known as tu quoque fallacy

Agreed. In others words, it's valid in arguments of ethics, but not logic. So it's perfect for politics.

Or to put it another way, appeals to hypocrisy can be used to point out flaws in a character, but not in the character's arguments.
