Better signal: are they a stranger on the internet? Don’t waste any time or energy. No good comes from it. Just say “you know I never thought Of that” and then you never have to.

Sometimes it's worth engaging strangers in debate, not so much to convince them as to convince onlookers.

Also important to remember that there isn't a single hard and fast rule. Use common sense. Consider the person's history/past tweets. Look to see if they have an agenda. Do they RT well-known ideologues/zealots/bad faith arguers? Are they neurotypical? Try to empathize w/ them.

I think nitpicking and goalpost-moving are actually important parts of serious, productive, on-going discussions (which are more productive than arguing).

An insult laden response to an opposing opinion on a tweet is, in my opinion an indicator of weak reasoning and logic. Insults especially from a stranger is a red flag to a fruitless energy depleting debate

Don’t forget Big Media’s favorite: pole-blinding - pretend their are only 2 sides or options using ambiguous labels like Left or Right to distract from or cleverly hide the more elucidating pole like Centralize vs Decentralize or Big vs Small.
