Define "writing as oneself"

This is a good point. I also believe selves are illusions. But what I meant is that writing makes one see oneself through the borrowed eyes of readers, and, eager to make an impression, we stylize ourselves. You can't really be someone without someone to be someone for.

Living is a performance. No one lives for themselves but lives for others. A Thespian.

And those who write for themselves gain one hell of an audience. Not necessarily quantity, but absolutely in quality.

All communication is governed by constraints of relevance. Being encyclopedic with self-presentation is not transparency. It is noise. Persona and message are matched for relevance and then conveyed. Selection is not hypocrisy except when self and message are covertly mismated.

I used to contribute to a hard core philosophy (of reality) forum. The main goal of the forum hosts was to promote non-attachment and egolessness. I was often referring to myself as a great pretender.
