Warning: many don’t have an opinion on something until they’re asked about it, at which point they cobble together a viewpoint from whim and half-remembered hearsay, before deciding that this 2-minute-old makeshift opinion will be their new hill to die on.

This is a good example why writing is so powerful. A person can explore their own opinion and ideas on a topic with a self critical eye, uncramped by the social bind created by the gaze of others.

I only realized in the past few years (I'm 71) how often I do this. Now I mostly stop myself, but only after I begin the cobbling together process. Why is it so hard to just say you have no opinion?

A key feature of the human algorithm is that it considers careful deliberation to be a waste of time and resources.

Our broader culture regards a lack of opinion as unattractive, weak and apathetic. Opinions often take years to evolve, but in today’s soundbyte/clickbait world, this is dishonoured, and actively discouraged.

Don't get frightened by not knowing things. I have approximate answers, and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I'm not absolutely sure of anything. There are many things I don't know anything about. It doesn't frighten me. 🧠 pic.twitter.com/NPfKzCViZy
