This is a good example why writing is so powerful. A person can explore their own opinion and ideas on a topic with a self critical eye, uncramped by the social bind created by the gaze of others.

I only realized in the past few years (I'm 71) how often I do this. Now I mostly stop myself, but only after I begin the cobbling together process. Why is it so hard to just say you have no opinion?

Our broader culture regards a lack of opinion as unattractive, weak and apathetic. Opinions often take years to evolve, but in today’s soundbyte/clickbait world, this is dishonoured, and actively discouraged.
