Neither coronavirus nor 9/11 have been anywhere near as impactful as the creation of the World Wide Web. The Internet is so intrinsic to modern life that, like Tim, we often take it for granted.https://twitter.com/TPCarney/status/1254841275238539265 …

If coronavirus and 9/11 are the two biggest events of our life, what is the third? (If you don't recall 9/11 or do recall Nixon resigning, you're not the target demo for this Q.)

But it wasn't a discreet "event" as such.

By that definition, neither was coronavirus.

That was my reaction to this, too. The creation of the WWW is sort of on par with the invention of agriculture or the invention of the printing press (personally, I think it's an even bigger deal than the printing press).

Is it the coronavirus or the viral nature of our response to it that is actually the 'biggest' event? I've already written a number of science fiction stories based on our response to it, and how easily 'lockstep' is evoked again... No, I'm not saying the virus isn't serious.

Applications of Relativistic Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics are the most ongoing impactful events. Without these two there is no WWW, no GPS, no MRI, no virology. Do not take them for granted. Embrace and understand them.

Not an US citizen (9/11-wise), but this strange - and also well known and trusted interwebs, we _all_ take for granted...

Doesn’t the fact that people take it for granted almost remove it from the discussion? Most people don’t “remember” the creation of the internet. It slowly, day by day, crept up and completely changed our lives. I’m hindsight I agree w/u but it not same “event” as 9/11 or COVID.

If it hadnt been invented at that time would it have occured anyway soon after? Or a big delay? Or would it have been quite different in nature?
