Jordan Peterson, Nicholas Nassim Taleb and other popular thinkers contend that even if gods don’t exist, we still need religion, because it evolved to protect us from harms we don’t understand. I wrote about why they are wrong.

@BretWeinstein bludgeoned@RichardDawkins on this topic. He argued natural selection gave both philosophies an opportunity and throughout the world, those with religion emerged in almost every case.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYzU-DoEV6k …1 reply 1 retweet 3 likes -

This assumes religion only takes place at the group level, and completely ignores the fact that memes also undergo natural selection. Religion may have "beat" atheism early in history because religious people tended to kill those who didn't agree with them.

No, I'm referring to your sarcastic use of quotes in your tweet. Atheism was beaten, not "beaten." Religion won. The vast majority of humanity are religious. We are pushing back with reason & rationale, which is fine, but let's not pretend religion is some odd, irrational thing.

Something can be irrational while also being widespread. And I wouldn't be so quick to declare religion the victor; our species is still young, and religion is currently being relinquished at an unprecedented rate.
