Unmerited arrogance is healthier than unmerited self-deprecation because you believe what you repeat. Open yourself to criticism only from your trusted mentors and true friends. People must earn their ability to criticize you.

Evaluating the source helps determine the accuracy of the critique/praise. I think your statement is 100% true when dealing with clearly defined situations (ie the feedback is a code review) vs broader situations (ie: receiving advice on whether you should make a career change.)
