Exposure to old peeling lead paint—which I saw EVERYWHERE—in childhood is probably the reason India is the world capital of cretinism.

Weirdly, from a mechanical perspective, the reason to add lead to gas was so engines with poor tolerances of moving parts would run longer. The choice was to make better fitting parts or melt lead in explosions so engines wouldn’t break.
